Latest Update: Important USPS Postmark Clarification

Mailing tax documents? Timing matters.

The U.S. Postal Service has clarified how postmarks are applied to mailed items. For tax-related filings and correspondence, the postmark date is based on when the mail is officially processed by USPS, not simply when it is placed in a mailbox or dropped off.

What this means for taxpayers:

  • Dropping mail into a mailbox does not guarantee same-day postmarking
  • Mail deposited after certain pickup times may receive a later postmark
  • A later postmark could affect filing deadlines or timely responses to IRS notices

To avoid issues, we recommend:

  • Mailing important tax documents well before the deadline
  • Visiting a staffed post office and requesting a hand-cancelled postmark
  • Using certified mail or another trackable mailing method when deadlines are critical

If you are unsure how or when to submit tax documents, we are happy to advise.
